Alal is a member of Ashar Alo Society (AAS) and lives in the southern part of Dhaka.* Eighteen years ago, he went abroad as a migrant worker. In mid 2011, he returned home due to frequent illness. He received treatment from different hospitals & clinics but the treatment was not fully effectual. Day by day his health condition was deteriorating and he was confined to bed. Finally the suggestion was for him to take an HIV testing and he was later found to be HIV positive. Naturally he was frustrated and lost hope in life.
Alal : “I was the main earning member of my family and I did a lot for them. But my family members didn’t stand beside me when I was diagnosed as HIV positive.”
He shared his thoughts to the peer counselor at AAS regarding stigma & discrimination towards him. AAS conducted an Uthan Baithak (Yard Counseling) with the family members and next door neighbors of Alal to increase social acceptance and reduce misconception regarding HIV.
The community was grateful to AAS for organizing such an Uthan Baithak which really reduced misconceptions of HIV and AIDS amongst family members as well as neighbors. As a result all the community extended their support to Alal.
